Kangasala will turn a bit more greener as the 2nd Kangasala Irish Festival – the Spring Gathering kicks off.

The festival is organized by volunteers of Irish Music Society of Tampere with the much appreciated support from Business Kangasala, Business Tampere, Kangasala Arts Centre, City of Kangasala, Culture Ireland, Online Academy of Irish Music, Embassy of Ireland in Finland, Irish Film Institute and the Arts Council Ireland.

The festival is full of program for all ages from Thursday to Saturday.

Thursday 25th April

6 pm : Jigs to Jacobites – stories behind dances

Kangasala Arts Centre, 15/10/8€

Premiere in Finland! Jigs to Jacobites combines Irish music, singing and dancing telling the stories of traditional Irish set dances and their historical context. The concert is based on a newly published book where these set dances and their stories have been compiled by Orfhlaith Ní Bhriain and Mick McCabe. Join the concert with Orfhlaith (singing, piano, concertina), Mick (Irish flute, tin whistle), Ruairi McCabe (Irish dance world champion) and Maija Koskenalusta (piano).

8 pm : Under the Clock – Irish film

7 pm : Eala and friends - 'Encounters' I

The first of two concerts dive into the similarities and differences of Irish and Finnish traditional music displaying the ways both these music cultures touch us in their unique ways. There must be a reason why Finnish and Irish get so well along! Welcome to join us to see and hear the dialogue of musical notes together with Maija Koskenalusta, Noora Karjalainen and Jyrki Koivisto from Eala and our Irish guests Kirsten Allstaff, Tola Custy, Thomas Johnston, Mick McCabe and Cillian O'Dalaigh. As a special guest we will also be joined by the charming Kangasala High School male choir Testostenorit or 'Testostenors'.

Saturday 27th April

11 am : Quiet Tree and the Creatures of Whistleberry Forest – in Finnish

Kangasala Arts Centre, 8 €

Join Thomas, Noora and Maija on a magical adventure with The Quiet Tree and the Creatures of Whistleberry Forest, created by Thomas Johnston, a doctor in music education. The children's musical has been translated to Finnish and the children will learn a few English words along the journey. The music story has been created for children of around 3 to 8 years of age.

10 am to 2.30 pm : Irish Music and Dance Workshops – OAIM Abroad

Online Academy of Irish Music will be hosting a series of workshops in Kangasala!

10.00-11.00 Irish song, Orfhlaith Ni Bhriain (Lepokoti)
12.00-13.00 Irish dancing - beginners, Lotta Virkkunen (Pikkola sports hall)
13.30-14.30 Guitar in Irish music, Cillian O’Dalaigh (Lepokoti)
13.30-14.30 Tin whistle - beginners, Kirsten Allstaff (Lepokoti)
13.30-14.30 Set dancing, an Irish social group dance where having fun is a priority - beginners, Mick McCabe (Pirtti)
13.30-14.30 Fiddle in Irish music - for people with basic skills on the fiddle, Tola Custy (Pirtti)

Fee 10 € / workshop. Please sign up by sending your name and name of the workshop you want to attend to irishtampere@gmail.com. Further information and instructions for paying the course fee follows. The workshops will be held in Pirtti, Lepokoti and Pikkola sports hall. Your own instrument needed in all other workshops except tin whistle. Come on time, show a printed receipt of the payment and enjoy!

3 pm : Pirtti Village Get-together

(Pirtti Community Hall), 10 € (adults), 5 € (children)

Welcome to a laid-back village get-together to enjoy Irish music, dance and even our Irish-inspired cafeteria! The local youth Testostenorit and Kangasala high school musical talents are starring this feast with Tola Custy and Maija Koskenalusta, and there might even be a chance to try out some Irish set dancing with the help of Ruairi and Mick McCabe. This event is especially child-friendly. Come and join us!
